STATEMENT OF THE PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN KUALA LUMPUR ON MH17

The officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur extend its heartfelt condolences to the Malaysian Government and people, especially to the bereaved families of the passengers and crew of those aboard Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.

The Embassy also joins in mourning for the loss of Filipinos Irene Pabellon-Gunawan, and her two children, Darryl Dwight and Sherryl Shania, who were enroute to the Philippines via Kuala Lumpur for a family reunion when the tragedy happened.

The Embassy is grateful to the management and staff of Malaysian Airlines for its assistance, especially in reaching out to the immediate members of the Gunawan family in the Philippines.

The Embassy has placed its flag at half-mast in remembrance of those who perished in this tragedy.

Earlier, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to come together to help determine those who are responsible for this brutal act against a civilian airliner in civilian airspace.

The Department also shared the hope that no tragedy of this kind would ever happen again, and all parties in disputes should exercise restraint, respect international law, and search for its peaceful resolution. END
