Phl Embassy, UMFM Host Hari Raya Reception

5 August 2016 — For the third year, the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Union of Muslim Filipinos in Malaysia (UMFM) hosted a Hari Raya reception on July 31. The event's guest of honor was Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, the chairman of Bernama, Malaysia national news agency.

Also present were UMFM officers and members, members of the Muslim Filipino community in Malaysia and their friends, Filipino students studying in Malaysian universities and Embassy officers and staff.

In his remarks, Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya highlighted how the Hari Raya celebration promotes sharing and the importance of family.

"As we celebrate the month of Syawal, we are reminded of the abundant blessings that Allah has bestowed and the importance of family and sharing our blessings. That is why perhaps Hari Raya open houses feature family-style dishes in huge quantities, and each one is warmly welcomed into the feast as part of one big extended family," he said.

"I would like to thank the Muslim Filipino community for their support to the Embassy's work, and we hope that there would be deepened collaboration between the Embassy and the Muslim Filipinos, particularly on Mindanao-related initiatives, especially now that the new administration under President Rodrigo Duterte is prioritizing the development of Mindanao and the welfare of Muslims, lumad indigenous people and Christians there," Ambassador Malaya added.

For his part, Datuk Seri Azman noted the strong links between the Philippines and Malaysia and is hopeful that with the new administration, this will grow stronger.

"I hope that there will be more opportunities for partnership between our two countries, especially that President Duterte is from Mindanao, and would surely look into concerns there, including those of Muslim Filipinos," he said.

During the event, the new set of UMFM officers also took their oath before Ambassador Malaya.

They include Ustadz Jamal Maulana Habib (president), Mariam binti Abdullah (vice president), Ustadz Dr. Mohammad Yusoph Marlon Abdullah (secretary), Ustadz Abdul Jalal Pandi Ampuan (treasurer), Ustadz Salahuddin Paguimanan Mondiang (auditor) and Daud Jovito dela Cruz and Anabelle binti Abdullah (public relations officers).
